Dr. Schmickley earned a B.S. in Zoology (pre medicine) at Iowa State University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at Michigan State University. He received postdoctoral training from Aaron T. Beck, MD, at the University of Pennsylvania, and subsequently was invited to be a Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy, an international organization of mental health professionals.
Dr. Schmickley is licensed to practice psychology in Michigan and North Carolina. He has provided psychological services in Veterans' Administration, community mental health, hospital, and multidisciplinary pain management settings, and has consulted with primary care, neurology, neurosurgery, occupational medicine, orthopedic, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and psychiatric practices.
Since 1988 Dr. Schmickley has been in private practice, where he evaluates and treats individuals involved in Disability, Motor Vehicle Accident, Personal Injury, and Workers' Compensation cases. He specializes in cases involving Depression, Anxiety and Posttraumatic disorders, Somatoform disorders including chronic pain, Cognitive impairment, Fitness-for-duty, Professional impairment, and Workplace violence.
Dr. Schmickley provides evidence-based, risk-factor prediction for presurgical and preinterventional cases; critical incident, fitness-for-duty, disability, and independent psychological evaluations; file reviews, forensic consultation, and expert testimony. In affiliation with Matrix, Inc., he provides empirically-based post offer selection and fitness-for-duty evaluations for public safety agencies.
